Born and raised in Singapore, Shin has spent most of her life near the sea. Growing up alongside Singapore’s murky coastal waters never diminished her fascination with the ocean — instead, it strengthened her curiosity about the natural world and the ecosystems hidden beneath the surface. From an early age, she developed a strong interest in nature, biodiversity, and environmental conservation, with beaches becoming one of her favourite places to go.
A single diving trip sparked Shin’s passion for the underwater world and revealed an entirely different environment thriving below the surface. Since then, she has been driven by a fascination with marine ecosystems and the need to better understand and protect them.
Shin is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Environmental Science at James Cook University Singapore, combining environmental knowledge with communication and engagement skills. She hopes to become a voice for the ocean by helping people better appreciate the natural world, understand why it should be protected, and recognise the role everyone can play in conservation and sustainability.
At JCU Singapore, Shin served as the lead of the Environmental Science and Aquaculture Society, where he plans and conducts activities focused on biodiversity, sustainability, and environmental awareness. These initiatives include nature walks, upcycling workshops, and aquaculture farm tours aimed at engaging students and fostering greater appreciation for the environment.
