Riley Benson

BSc - Marine Science | University of Tampa (USA)
MSc | James Cook University

Riley grew up in a land locked state in the USA (Missouri) but has been interested in the ocean and in marine biology for as long as she can remember.  Annual beach holidays fostered this interest and led her to move to Florida for her bachelor’s degree and then to Australia for her masters. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she gained valuable lab experience working with stable isotope analysis for sea turtle migration studies in Florida, and as an outdoor educator in South Carolina.

Riley is currently employed by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI), conducting recreational fisheries surveys.  Alongside this role, she spends her time volunteering with shark research projects, both in the field and remotely. Riley is passionate about conservation and believes that connecting with people through outreach and education is the most tangible way to make a difference in marine conservation.

Riley's current and recent projects include:

  • Assessing age and growth for the winghead shark (Eusphyra blochii) in the Northern Territory, Australia
