I am an applied researcher and conservation practitioner working at the interface of research, policy, and community action to protect marine biodiversity while supporting coastal livelihoods. Through my postdoctoral research at Oxford and Bangor Universities, I currently lead the design and evaluation of people-centred, evidence-based marine conservation programs in Indonesia, in partnership with local NGOs, researchers, communities and policy makers. I am particularly interested in evidence-based behavioural and organisational change, incentive-based approaches, and the interface between biodiversity and human wellbeing.
I have roughly 15 years of experience in academia, non-profits and the private sector in Southeast Asia, Europe and East Africa. My field-based experience includes shark and ray management and illegal manta ray trade in Indonesia (Wildlife Conservation Society), protected area management and anti-poaching in East Africa (Frankfurt Zoological Society), and community-based tourism in rural Ethiopia.
Current Projects
-
Designing and testing incentive-based approaches to delivering marine biodiversity and human wellbeing outcomes through a grant from The Darwin Initiative
-
Embedding these approaches and lessons learned into policy and management with support from the Shark Conservation Fund, including running the world’s first experimental evaluations of marine conservation incentives in Indonesian small-scale fisheries
