Emily Clark

BSc - Marine Biology | University of Washington (USA)
MSc - Marine Biology | James Cook University

After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Washington, Emily worked as a North Pacific groundfish observer for Saltwater Inc, where she collected data on bycatch on Alaskan fishing vessels. Emily experienced living on catcher boats, factory boats, and onshore processing plants while observing the operations of pollock, pacific cod, rockfish, and flatfish fisheries. Some day-to-day tasks included collecting data on bycatch species, collecting biological specimens such as otoliths, reporting fishing and safety violations, and sending data to NMFS (The National Marine Fisheries Service). The bycatch data was used in real-time to manage the groundfish fisheries.

After moving to Australia to pursue a master’s degree in marine biology, Emily volunteered for the JCU Turtle Health Research facility and gained experience in turtle husbandry and regular maintenance of aquaculture systems. She is currently undertaking her placement with the F&F Lab where she contributes to the data analysis of the PADI Global Shark and Ray Census as well as assisting Dr. Michael Grant with literature reviews and IUCN Red List assessments.

Emily's current and recent projects include:

  • Red List assessments of sharks and rays of the Arabian Peninsula

  • Literature review of grey literature about fish maw
